Guided Surgery

Also known as: Computer-guided implants, surgical guide, digital implant planning, CAD/CAM surgery

Digitally planned implant placement using a 3D-printed surgical guide.

Guided surgery uses digital planning software and a 3D-printed surgical guide to place implants with a high degree of precision, ensuring the implant goes exactly where it was planned — at the correct position, angle, and depth.

The process

  1. CBCT scan of the jaw is taken
  2. Digital scan or impression of the teeth is taken
  3. The two datasets are combined in planning software
  4. The optimal implant position is planned virtually, considering bone volume, aesthetics, and the planned restoration
  5. A surgical guide is designed and 3D-printed
  6. The guide fits over the patient's teeth during surgery and directs the drill

Benefits

  • Greater precision — reduces risk of nerve or sinus involvement
  • Allows fully guided flapless surgery in appropriate cases
  • Enables immediate loading (same-day teeth) planning
  • Reduces surgical time and patient anxiety
  • Allows the restoration to be planned before surgery (prosthetically driven)

Limitations

Guided surgery requires additional planning time and cost. The guide is only as accurate as the scan and software; any inaccuracy in the scans propagates to the surgery. Not suitable for all cases, particularly where significant grafting is needed.
