CBCT Scan

Also known as: 3D scan, cone beam CT, CBCT, digital volume tomography

A 3D X-ray showing bone volume, density and key anatomy for precise implant planning.

CBCT (Cone Beam Computed Tomography) is a specialised 3D X-ray used as standard in implant planning. Unlike a conventional 2D dental X-ray, CBCT produces a three-dimensional image of the jaw showing precise bone height, width, density, and the exact location of important structures such as nerves, sinuses, and tooth roots.

Why CBCT is essential for implants

Placing an implant without 3D imaging is clinically irresponsible. A CBCT scan allows the clinician to:

  • Measure bone volume precisely at the implant site
  • Identify the inferior alveolar nerve and avoid it
  • Assess proximity to the maxillary sinus
  • Detect any pathology (cysts, infection) not visible on 2D X-rays
  • Plan the optimal implant position, angle, and length digitally before surgery
  • Design a surgical guide for guided implant placement

Radiation dose

A small field-of-view CBCT (used for a single implant site) delivers a radiation dose roughly equivalent to a few conventional dental X-rays — far less than a medical CT scan. The diagnostic benefit far outweighs the minimal radiation risk.

Guided surgery

CBCT data can be used to design a 3D-printed surgical guide that fits over your teeth and directs the drill to the exact planned position, depth and angle — significantly improving precision and reducing surgical time.
