Emergence Profile

Also known as: Gum emergence, prosthetic emergence, aesthetic emergence

The shape of the restoration as it exits the gum — critical to natural aesthetics.

The emergence profile describes the shape of the implant restoration (crown or abutment) as it emerges from the gum tissue. A natural-looking implant should appear to come out of the gum in the same way a natural tooth root would — not like a post sticking straight up through a hole.

Why it matters

Poor emergence profile is one of the most common causes of an implant looking unnatural. If the crown is too narrow where it exits the gum, an unnatural dark shadow appears. If too wide, the gum is pushed outward unnaturally.

How it is created

The emergence profile is shaped gradually using a healing abutment (gingival former) after implant placement. Over several weeks, the gum tissue is gently trained into the desired shape. A custom-moulded temporary crown can further refine the profile before the final restoration is made.

Front vs back teeth

Emergence profile is most critical for front teeth (the aesthetic zone) where any irregularity is immediately visible. For posterior teeth, function takes priority over aesthetics, though a good emergence profile is still important for cleaning and gum health.
